Verandah Club is a collective of deviants who are interested in the latest opportunities and news relating to the annual publication of the Verandah literary and art journal.

Launched in 1986, Verandah is one of the longest-running print journals of its kind here in Melbourne, Australia. Each year a new team of editors select and publish full-colour photography, art and design alongside poetry and prose from contributors worldwide. An art prize is awarded to an outstanding piece, and we select the cover of the journal from among the art submissions.

Submissions for each edition are typically accepted from January until late April. So take up your instrument, be it a tablet, pen or paintbrush, and get involved!

The Bullet EaterIt's only been a day. One day, Isaiah. Look at her. She's just so beautiful. Such beautiful black silk hair and cocoa brown eyes. I can see her porcelain skin mirror the pigment of the heavenly white background. "Isaiah! Isaiah! Return to me my love!" Her slender thin hand is yearning for mine. How can I not be so allured by her sun shine smile? Or her smooth extravagant voice? I'm only getting closer to her. We'll be together again. I'm floating now. I'm floating to my beloved phantom like a dry leaf in autumn wind. My hand is only a centimeter away.

The Last ThingThe last thing the boy ever wrote
Was a sorrowful note

Anorexia1.

Forming shadows at your doorstep
I was the moth caught in the candlelight
My veins gleamed within the fire
As its embers shone bright

As it echoed on your windowpane
I was drawn into the nostalgia
Of world-watching on a parallel plane
And searching for refugia

Your blood would fall between your words
For your ribs had been cracked open
And you were a ghost's ephemeral:

At Midnight.At midnight I read with eyes too familiar with the dark.
I read what's on your mind
and every word is a heartache.
They engrave themselves upon the surface of my mind,
overwriting my thoughts with those of your own.

At midnight I write with hands that smell of garlic.
I write what's in my heart
and every word is an open wound.
They bleed onto the paper,
staining the page with all the things I feel but no longer say.

After midnight I try and rest a body that feels as if it's all been said and done before.

The new editing team for edition 28 of Verandah will be accepting submissions for print publication until May 1!

And the best part? This year we've decided to waive art submission fees for all DeviantArt users. Please note: this offer applies to any VISUAL ART only, so if you have words at the ready, submission fees will still apply. New year, new publishing opportunity

Hi all,

Verandah Literary and Art Journal is back in its 28th year of publication. We have a brand new editing and design team, and are again seeking submissions of visual art, poetry and fiction to be published at the end of this year.

Submission deadlines are May 1 for art, and June 1 for literature.

This year, to submit your work please visit www.deakin.edu.au/verandah and follow the guidelines. There is a submission fee of $10, however we will be waiving the fee for VISUAL ART ONLY for members of this group, just mention your username in the cover letter.

We will be using one of the art pieces for the cover of the book.

Happy artistry, and please feel free to spread the word!
